Physician Suicide — An Unexpected Solution
(If you are suffering, you owe it to yourself to consider the words below)
Go back to when you first envisioned a life of healing and helping people through medical practice. Do you remember what it felt like moving toward that? For most, the inspiration became a profound driving force—the impetus behind gaining the profound ability to make a lasting difference for others.
Regardless of how the journey started, the vision easily becomes burdened by obligations inherent in the dominant model of medical business. Is that you?
We'll be discovering an alternative answer in a moment. It's a solution that represents a complete shift and it's working very well for a growing number of physicians and medical professionals. Most don't even know it exists. Once discovered, the common regret is not finding it sooner.
Maybe it's for you and maybe not, but stay with this thread for a few moments while we take an honest look at what the current medical environment is costing too many physicians.

Are you drowning in paperwork, regulations, and insurance? How about losing a patient and knowing you are too rushed for the next appointment to even process the grief? Sound familiar? Are you experiencing a work life that is so tightly scheduled and encumbered with obligations that you suspect you've lost the freedom to be yourself?

Ever feel so swallowed up in the system that in private moments you feel depressed—even suicidal?
If any number of the above questions represent your experience, you are not alone. Doctors as a whole, bear these frustrations and challenges to such a degree that they put an end to their lives at alarming rates—about double the rate of the average population.

Struggling doctors have at least three main choices . . .
Choice number 1 — The Predictable Future.
Just for a moment, get in touch with your level of aliveness and fulfillment—especially while on the job. On a scale of 1 to 10, where would you place yourself? Are you or your colleagues at a 4 or less?

If you are suffering from depression, burnout, or suicidal thoughts, living into a predictable future with more-of-the-same unfolding in front of you is a common option—and generally a very poor choice.
Getting a sense of the predictable future is simple. You need only look at the last 6 to 12 months and take a pulse on your life force. Good, bad or ugly, confront that as it is. |
Without action, the next weeks and months are likely to pass in the same unfulfilled, predictable way—if that's how it's been for you. Just as an unused muscle leads to atrophy, the draining your life force over time leads to an empty and powerless existence. Some call it getting the life sucked out of them.
As arduous as this kind of future sounds, it's often the lack of a compelling alternative that immobilizes a physician. If that's your situation, you might skip down to choice number 3. Even if it's not, you are invited to see why the Ideal Medical Care Movement is picking up steam across the US. There are sound reasons why it's restoring practices with game-changing results.

Choice number 2 — Suicide.
You end your life and all possibilities of future contribution and promise while causing intense pain and loss for everyone who cares about you. Don't leave me now Doc. You can't see it, but there's an extended hand on the other side of this writing. That hand labored over this message to you. I need you to stay with me so you can bridge the gap you are struggling with—and there is an answer. Before considering suicide any further, notice that something inside you is still looking for a way to make it all work. |
You wouldn't have read this far without some glimmer of light looking for a way forward. If you see the truth in that, take a look at the next alternative. It will introduce you to a very different model while allowing you to work, (and dare I say “play?") in a way that energizes and fulfills.
For some, just hearing this rare 10 minute interview changes everything.

Choice number 3 — The Compelling Future.
Sounds great, but how is a compelling future created? Begin by realizing that there is a uniquely different kind of medical practice design for doctors. Problems are sometimes solved by altering the flawed model that is the culprit. This redesigned model has been structured in a way that serves doctors and patients. It also has them both smiling a lot more often.
|
Wait, did I say “smiling?" That's not much of a medical term. How much have you heard about happy faces during your medical training? Very little we would guess—and that's too bad. If you've ever read Anatomy of an Illness by Norman Cousins, or other credible content on the subject, you know that one's state of being has a huge influence on wellness.
That plays out exponentially for doctors, since their well-being affects multiple patients.
Here's the truth . . . No voice came out of the sky proclaiming the current model and typical protocols that most doctors have come to accept as normal. Yet, even when it is killing doctors, it's somehow easy to think that the dominant paradigm is the only way to practice medicine.
It isn’t. But a willingness to change means being able to take a stand for your life or at least new possibilities. No matter how down-trodden you may feel, if you have the ability to sit or stand up, you have the ability to do something. Enter this pointer from Mr. Einstein: "Problems cannot be solved at the same level of awareness that they were created in."
With that in mind, know that there's a movement underway a growing number of physicians have happily adopted. It's transformative by nature and is known as the Ideal Medical Care Movement. Doctors like yourself who have already made the leap say that it's been long overdue.

Are you suffering where you are?
Doctor, that's a signal worth your attention. It's equally or more important than the kind you ask patients to notice. Paying attention to that NOW is the all-important matter. Consider that it's time to stop bumping into the walls inside your current fish tank when it's possible to swim freely. Have you become resigned to thinking that working in a way you love is even possible? |
That would be important to notice too, and noticing is different than surrendering. Become aware of the kind of practice very different than the one which could be snuffing the life out of you.
Is more predictable future an answer for the life you are leading? Killing yourself is a way out, but usually a last resort for one who hasn't yet found another way out toward meaningful change. There is one. You have courage within, or you wouldn't have been able to come so far in a profession that has demanded much.
Are you willing to at least open a door to that with a click of your finger? Keep your patients in mind as well, as the model you are opening a door to was largely designed by them.
